Why are Lifeguards Important?

Globally, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional death in the world, with approximately one million deaths a year. In Canada, drowning is said to be the third leading cause of unintentional death among people less than 60 years of age, with 500 fatalities annually. Among children 1-4 years of age, drowning is the number one cause of unintentional injury deaths and for children under 10 years it is the second leading cause of preventable death.

BARBADOS: DROWNINGS

ACCORDING TO W.H.O. DATA PUBLISHED IN 2017, DROWNING DEATHS IN BARBADOS REACHED 1 OR 0.04% OF TOTAL DEATH.

Deaths % Rate World Rank
1 0.04 0.35 180

Fortunately we are not subject to such frequent occurrences. However, we believe that even one death through drowning is too many.

Many people assume that people who are drowning are easy to identify because they will be yelling or waving their arms. However, this isn’t always common. Instead, people tend to drown in more quiet, less attention-getting ways. Drowning people usually struggle to keep their mouth above the surface of the water in order to breathe, so they are rarely able to call out or wave their arms.

Observational studies of people at flat beaches have revealed that non-swimming adults are generally able to struggle on the surface of the water for about 60 seconds, while infants and very small children can submerge in as little as 20 seconds. The inability of a person to call or wave for help in the short time period before submerging emphasizes the need for lifeguards as a source for continuous surveillance and immediate action.

It therefore takes a trained eye with special skills to prevent accidents and spot potential trouble/hazards before they become life-threatening, and responding to emergencies when needed. They also educate the public about the risks associated with aquatic activities and how to be Water Smart.

When patrons enter an aquatic facility, they trust that they are protected by a well-trained and well-managed professional Lifeguard team. A solid lifeguard team through recruitment, selection, training, supervision and evaluation and the foregoing is complimented by adequate and up to date equipment.

The BIG Question Is – HOW CAN I ASSIST?

Adopt-A-Tower –

Adopting a tower demonstrates that your business takes an interest in wider social issues, rather than just those that impact your profit margins. This approach attracts customers who share the same values. Adopting a tower will afford your company a level of branding that will clearly identify and link your brand to an essential service.

A Corporate sponsor will be acknowledged on the National Conservation Commission’s Website, Instagram and Facebook pages. Sponsor will also recognised during a Press briefing, through the placement of appropriate signage identifying them as sponsors and a controlled level of branding will be allowed on the tower.

● Sponsor Signage –

Signage is a cost effective and extremely valuable complimentary tool used by the Lifeguard Service in an effort to prevent injury and drowning.  Through its provision of information about risks and hazards associated with specific areas, locations or activities, signage is essential for thorough and effective water safety practice. The use of symbols in signage facilitates the rapid transmission of information in a manner that often transcends language barriers so that the meaning and purpose of signs can be conveyed to a diverse audience. Signs work to minimise risk by providing information which aims to subsequently affect behaviour. The type of sign and the message to be transferred will vary based on location. Branding opportunities will be offered to sponsors of Signage. (See examples below)

8' x 4' Aluminium Sign - Cost $2,009.25

48” x 96” Aluminium Sign - Cost $2,303.00
